Now that the End Times are amongst us, and following after the nostalgia that characterizes this blog, I'm going to talk a bit 'bout Mordheim.

In short, and for those who aren't acquainted with it, Mordheim is a skirmish wargame placed in the same setting than Warhammer Fantasy Battles, but around 500 years before the "current" date, by the time a comet falls down from the skies setting in flames the city that gives name to the game. Its main feature it's an integrated campaign system that allows to evolve your small army beyond skillsets: not only you get benefits for surviving combat, but there are consequences for falling in combat. Such an event can make a sturdy soldier come back in the next game maimed, with an accuracy reduction due to losing an eye....

Talking on the personal level, i found out about this game way too late.... I noticed when Games Workshop opened their "specialist games" section on their old website, where a free PDF download nudged me towards trying the game. Basically, it plays just as the WFB of then did, but handling a bunch of heroes (or heroines) instead of long blocks of infantry.

I find that the main trouble to play a game of Mordheim isn't about collecting and painting your characters, but having an adequate table. Mordheim as a city is just one more character in the game: you need heavy scenography, with walls and streets to adequately represent the ruins of the old city. Warriors hide from archers, prowlers lie in ambush to take down distracted combatants, and sometimes jumping from roof to roof is the only way out a certain death.

Thus, we slowly turn an eye towards my current project (or rather, yet another one).

That's the first section, still in progress, of a modular scenic table for this awesome game. The main idea behind it is having several sections measuring 30x30cm, and using at least 9 of them to represent fragments of the city. Here i'm showing one of the sections where the river crosses Mordheim, which it will be dry enough so crews can use as an added level of complexity to move. I'd also like to represent somehow the sewers... That one i'll manage when I get to it.

For those interested on it's creation, the material is a sheet of extruded PVC, with a layer of polystyrene. Both materials are easily found on distributors of building materials. Specially the polystyrene, used often as insulation material for walls and ceilings. I find this material very easy to texturize with the aid of a modelling blade and tons of patience. However, is that ease of shaping that makes it fragile, so the grounds are hardened with sheets of PVC or plasticard. The shown pieces of scenography are both from citadel (from the "forest" and watchtower kits), though I'll mainly be using 4Grounds' Fabled Realms catalog.
